ARTIST FOCUS:DEBORAH STRATMAN

(Hugh MacDiarmid)

What happens to us / Is irrelevant to the world’s geology / But what happens to the world’s geology / is not irrelevant to us. – Hugh MacDiarmid

Artist and filmmaker Deborah Stratman examines power, control, and belief, revealing the intricate connections between places, ideas, and society. Our Artist Focus program showcases three selected films by Stratman, each offering profound meditations on humanity's relationship with the world and the mysteries of the cosmos. Stratman's films challenge anthropocentric perspectives and invite viewers to imaginatively engage with nonhuman subjectivities. Bridging the cosmic and terrestrial, human and geologic, her work underscores the interconnectedness of all earthly and celestial matter.

...These Blazeing Starrs!

Synopsis:

Since comets have been recorded, they’ve augured disaster: catastrophe, messiahs, upheaval and end times. A short film about these meteoric ice-cored fireballs and their historic ties to divination that combines imagery of 15th-18th century European broadsides with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory footage.

…These Blazeing Starrs! juxtaposes a modern empirical desire to probe and measure against older methods, when star gazers were translators, explicating the sky more intuitively for predictions of human folly. Comets are now understood as time capsules harboring elemental information about the formation of our solar system. Today we smash rockets into them to read spectral signatures. In a sense, they remain oracles – it’s just the manner of divining which has changed.

Last Things

Synopsis:

Last Things looks at evolution and extinction from the perspective of the rocks and minerals that came before humanity and will outlast us. With scientists and thinkers like Lynn Margulis and Marcia Bjørnerud as guides and quoting from the proto-Sci-fi texts of J.H. Rosny, Deborah Stratman offers a stunning array of images, from microscopic forms to vast landscapes, and seeks a picture of evolution without humans at the center.

The Name is not the Thing named

Synopsis:

In support of experiences that are essentially common, but to which language does not easily adhere, the video passes through places that are both themselves, and stand-ins for others. The title is taken from Aleister Crowley’s 1918 translation of the Tao Te Ching.
